Spring Birdsong – Learn the Birds’ Songs in the Field

Most people associate birdsong with spring and summer – but which birds are actually singing, and how do you tell them apart? If you want to learn the songs of the most common Danish birds – or refresh your memory of the species you already know – you will greatly enjoy this practical bird course. On four birdsong tours on Møn, we work systematically with birdsong throughout the spring. We start early in the morning on a fixed weekday and listen, practice, and learn to recognize different bird songs in the field. We follow the birds through the spring and listen as they gradually appear and join in with their characteristic songs:

End of March: The first singers of spring, such as tits, thrushes, and treecreepers, fill the woods and thickets with their first notes. This is an easy time to start learning the most common species.
April: More species arrive, e.g., chiffchaff, Lesser Whitethroat, blackcap, and redstart, and the birdsong choir becomes more diverse.
May: Most songbirds have now arrived, and birdsong is at its peak. Here we train our ears to sort multiple voices and recognize new species while enjoying the intense bird activity of spring.
June: All migratory birds have arrived, and there is a chance to encounter some of the rare and uncommon species.

After the four tours, you will be able to distinguish the songs of the most common Danish birds and experience nature in a calm and immersive way. You will gain practical learning, better understanding of birdsong, and wonderful nature experiences.

Practical information

The aim of the birdsong course is to give you knowledge and skills to recognize the most common Danish birds’ songs, so you can distinguish them in the field.

Course Content and Structure:

Learn the most common birds’ songs and calls.
Four birdsong tours spread over the spring.
Period: end of March to mid-June.
The course takes place as practical learning in the field.
Each tour lasts approximately 3–4 hours.
Start time: usually 7:00 AM, with the option to start earlier (e.g., at sunrise in May/June).
Tours take place on foot at a relaxed pace. We stop along the way to listen and practice recognizing birdsong.
Time for short breaks along the way, e.g., a coffee break.

Since the highest birdsong activity occurs in the early morning hours, each tour also starts early.

The tours are on foot. We walk quietly at a relaxed pace and stop to listen to the birds singing, reviewing and practicing the characteristics of their various songs.

There will be time and opportunity for a “coffee break” along the way.
