A Thrush Nightingale Tour at Amager Fælled

Experience the Thrush Nightingale and a magical morning at Amager Fælled

Go birding and hear the Thrush Nightingale's distinctive and enchanting song. Experience the magical atmosphere of twilight, and spring and summer's impressive chorus of bird songs, that is heard at dawn. The Thrush Nightingale is one of our most famous and mythical birds. Not least because H.C. Andersen immortalized the Nightingale in the famous fairy tale of the same name. Other poets and writers such as Grundtvig, Blicher, Tove Meyer and Astrid Lindgren have also written about the Thrush Nightingale. The Thrush Nightingale is primarily known for its fantastic song, that, with its whistles, clucks and snarl, is perhaps more distinctive and remarkable than beautiful and melodic, such as, for example, the Blackbird's song! It is also a bird few people have seen. This bird you can experience it in the middle of the city - just a few kilometers from the Town Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen)! As loudly as it sings, as discreetly the Nightingale lives. With its dark brown upperpart, light brown-grey underpart and reddish-brown tail, the plumage is neither conspicuous nor showy. It lives a discreet life most of the time and prefers to stay hidden in the vegetation. So even though the male sings loudly, it is very difficult to catch a glimpse of it - even when you are only a few meters away! But if you just once have experienced the Nightingale singing, on a beautiful summer morning, you remember it as one of the great natural experiences. It's an experience you shouldn't miss out on! If you want to experience the Thrush Nightingale's song, you should go out and listen in May and June. Because it only stays in the country for a short time. It arrives from the beginning of May and already leaves the country again from the end of July. The Thrush Nightingale must be experienced in nature - as the Nightingale itself says in the fairy tale: "It does best in the green!" Tour description - morning tour On the morning tour we start early - preferably before sunrise - because at that time you can really experience the magical atmosphere when the Nightingale and all the other birds starts singing. We walk at a leisurely pace along gravel paths, stopping several times along the way to listen for birds and experience the impressive morning chorus of birdsong taking shape. We also try to learn to tell the difference between the different species based on their song. In addition to the Thrush Nightingale - the tour's main attraction - we expect to hear a number of common species, such as Blackbird, Song Thrushes, Dunnock, Lesser Whitethroat, Blackcap, Whitethroat, Reed Warbler, Willow Warbler and Chiffchaffs, and, not least, Common Cuckoo. If we're lucky, we might hear Icterine Warbler - or even Grasshopper Warbler . Tour description - evening tour If you're not a morning person - take an evening tour instead! On the evening tour we start approx. an hour's, to an hour and a half before sunset. We walk quietly and listen to the birds singing at dusk. Along the way, we experience how the birdsong diminishes during the evening, until we only hear the Thrush Nightingale, which continues into the night. We end the trip approx. 30-45 minutes after the sun has set. We expect to hear the same bird species as on the morning walk, but since the singing activity of the birds is usually greater in the morning hours, it will not be experienced nearly as intensely. But it can also be an advantage, as the individual species are easier to hear without their song disappearing in the crowd.

Your bird guide

Can you imagine a world without birds? I can't! I have been an avid and passionate birdwatcher from an early age, and therefore have many years of experience in birdwatching. I have extensive local knowledge of the birdlife of Møn and Nyord. That also goes for all the sites where we arrange birdwatching tours. In addition to being a bird tour guide, I also participate in monitoring and ringing of birds. Furthermore, I am a blogger writing about birds and travels. Uffe Damm Andersen
